It was Valentine’s Day 2014, and I was getting ready to go out with The Salesman to a dinner theater at our church. Since our oldest daughter had just gotten married at the beginning of the month, I decided I was going to get one more wear out of that gorgeous navy sequined dress I wore to the rehearsal dinner. I had the shimmering beauty on and was sitting down in front of the mirror, applying my make-up when I started feeling like I was going to pass out. So, I went and laid down on our bed. I was not sure what was going on.
I did know that it had been a busy seven months, starting with:
In August, our youngest daughter, Victoria, went away to college.
Two weeks later, my dear Dad moved in to live with us, and I became his caregiver.
In January, my Dad was hospitalized and put on a breathing tube, then moved to a rehab hospital for recovery.
While Dad was in the rehab hospital, our oldest daughter, Audra Elizabeth, got married.
We were listing our house to sale and move into town.
It had been very busy. But other than having seasonal symptoms and discomfort that had ramped up since we moved to the area, I was doing well. I had just tried a new medication for the discomfort that week.
But this feeling of “passing out” did not go away when I returned to doing my make-up again. So, I headed back to lay down and that was exactly where The Salesman found me when he came home. Since I am always on the go, he joked about me being on the bed; but, once I described to him how I felt, he started orchestrating a trip to the doctors office in the next big town. I really did not feel well. Every time I sat up, I felt like I was going to pass out. He got someone to watch my dad and stopped at the first doctors office in town.
As soon as they took blood pressure, they said he needed to take me immediately to the emergency room. Not quite the Valentine’s date I’d planned. I was in my sequined gown and ready for dinner theater with The Salesman. I am guessing the triage folks thought I was having a heart attack because they rushed me back and was seen by two doctors and a specialist. Guessing that most folks here don’t go to the ER in their formal clothes, we had lots of questions asking where we were headed.
Well, I had to spend the night for observation because my heart rate was way above normal, and that was why I was feeling like I was going to pass out, because I had been very close to passing out. The specialist told me that I had an allergy, of all things, to the over-the-counter allergy drugs that I’d taken and that I was not to take them any more. I asked if he would prescribe an antibiotic for my seasonal symptoms and discomfort. Without hesitation , he said no. I asked what I was supposed to do, and he told me to go outside and take a walk.
Take a walk…
I was not the happiest when I heard this; but, in looking back, it turns out to be one of the favorite parts of this whole scenario was the specialist telling me to do something very natural, to go outside and take a walk.
I seriously did not know what I was going to do because we had moved to beautiful east Tennessee and the flowers and trees were abundant; but, so were my seasonal symptoms.
What was I going to do?
I asked my chiropractor, Emily, for advice because traditional medicine was no longer an option for me. Emily referred me to a lady who sold essential oils. I had never heard of essential oils in 2014. I went to her home, told her my symptoms and how I ended up in the ER and could no longer take over-the-counter medicines because they caused my heart to race.
She recommended I try Young Living’s Lavender and Peppermint oils. The whole natural health approach appealed to me, so I signed up and started using the little bottles of oil for my seasonal symptoms.
Fast forward to 2020, and those two oils – Young Living lavender and Young Living peppermint have kept me free from seasonal symptoms and discomfort. I use Young Living lavender and peppermint daily. I was so thankful for a natural alternative because I had an allergy to the medicine that made my heart race, and my body could no longer take the over-the-counter medicines.
This alternative was so natural, it was like taking a walk outside… In fact, the essential oils are derived from plants – representing the best from God-given nature!
