Words & Women that Knit

A Word

25 Oct

I’ve been reading a Proverbs each day this month and when I came to chapter 25 today, I first thought of my mama.

I can still hear her voice on the cassette player of my mind saying:

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold

In settings of silver.”

Proverbs 25:11 KJV

Sweet memories loop on replay for me. Mama knew I needed this verse.

Then I close out the last verse of the chapter with thoughts of my speech teacher sharing our class verse:

“Whoever has no rule over his own spirit

Is like a city broken down, without walls.”

Proverbs 25:28 KJV

She knew I needed this verse, too.

Two women I love dearly and the two verses that connect me to them like yarn strands being tied together to continue knitting an afghan.

I read the verses and my mind stops and I think of the strong and steadfast women who shared Ancient Words with me and I miss these women in the rhythms of my life.

I miss the love, and life, of my dear mama and a teacher whose words still help me to find my voice.

As I let the Words wrap around my mind and heart, I am thankful for the sweet associations I have with these verses and women of faith.

I pick up the yarn of my life and tie a firm knot onto His everlasting Word and I keep my knitting needles going.

To continue in the times when we feel, and see, the very real ends.

To know that people we love pass from our seeming reality to an everlasting one.

To know that we can take The Word of God and tie a knot to His Truth and keep pressing on till we finish the afghan, or course of, our temporal life.

His Word gives hope and strength and comfort.

Do you have a verse that every time you read it, you think of the person that introduced you to it?

If so, please share in the comments. I’d love to hear your story.
